Christ Church was built during the period 1866/67 when the surrounding district was formed into a new parish, separated from the original Great Island parish then known as Clonmel. The first incumbent (1866 -1899) was Rev'd Canon Richard Loane and in 1903 it is noted that the population of the parish was approximately 260.
The church was designed in the Gothic style by local architect, William Hill. It is built of cut limestone and boasts a notable spire measuring 150 ft. high. The organ is an interesting example of a well preserved tracker-action organ built, probably to the specifications of the original organist, by the renowned organ builders, T.C. Lewis of Brixton, London.
There are three beautiful stained glass windows at the East end of the church depicting Faith, Hope and Charity. The two South windows in the sanctuary were erected by Capt. W.H. Rushbrooke in 1894 in memory of James Deane who was agent of the Rushbrooke estate. The altar cross stands in memory of Arthur Hugh Smith Barry (Lord Barrymore 1843-1925) who owned the Fota estate.
