The festival is delighted to present one of Elgar's greatest works, which the composer himself described as 'the best of me'. Cardinal Newman's poem, describing the death and journey to Purgatory of the old man Gerontius, is set to music on a grand scale for soloists, a large chorus and orchestra. The chorus depicts both demons and angels at different points in the narrative while the solo parts are heroic and tender in equal measure.
The East Cork Choral Society and the Guinness Choir from Dublin join together for the first time and are accompanied by the Cork Fleischmann Symphony Orchestra.
